Tech Tip Tuesday - Excel - Sometimes Being Short is Good Thing

When using Excel have you ever needed a long heading to appear in two lines within a single cell? It just overlaps the cell next to it. You might already know that can use "Wrap Text", but have you ever wanted to control where the "wrap" occurs? Another way to wrap text in a single cell is to create a "line break" in a cell by pressing "Alt + Enter" to start a new line. You can create as many lines as you want. See the example below.

Excel has many other great keyboard shortcuts to make our lives a little easier. Below is a list of some that you can test and adapt for your own use. Hopefully, the shortcuts help you to work more efficiently and effectively!

Formulas and Navigation

​Edit the selected cell.
F4
Repeat last action. For example, if you changed the color of text in another cell, pressing F4 will change the text in cell to the same color.
Ctrl+Shift+%
Format number in percentage format.
​Ctrl+Shift+$
Format number in currency format.
​Ctrl+5
​Applies a strikethrough to the text in a cell.
Shift+F10
Opens the right-click menu for the cell you're in.
​Ctrl+Shift-Down/Up Arrow
Selects all the cells above or below the current cell.
​Ctrl+A
​Select all contents of the worksheet.

Columns and Rows

Shortcut

Ctrl+Space
​Select entire column.
Shift+Space
​Select entire row.
Ctrl+-
Delete the selected column or row.
​Ctrl+Shift+=
​Insert a new column or row.
Ctrl+0
Hides the current column

Open the Excel formula window.

​Navigates to the last cell that contains data
Ctrl+F6
Switch between open workbooks or windows
Ctrl+up/down/
right/left
​Shift to the last cell that content data
​​"Scroll Lock" Key
​When using the key scrolling, it switches from cells navigation to worksheet navigation.
